During 2007, Food For Life Vrindavan Society has been running a project to train local unqualified villagers as health guides with basic training in nutrition, health, hygiene and mid-wifery. The success of the project can be seen in the figures: 0% mortality in 2007 amongst the children and 720 pregnant women who have been cared for by the health guides. Mathura District Administration states that there is a mortality rate of 8% for infants born in the area, whilst in the lowest 20% of society, the mortality rate is nearer 10%.
We are extremely proud of our health guides, but more importantly know that we must continue with the social development programme. According to UNICEF, the state of Utter Pradesh in which Vrindavan is, has a maternal mortality rate of 700 deaths per 100,000. (China has a rate of 60 per 100,000).
